ARTIST PROFILE – KAREN PHELPS

I was lucky to have had well known children’s book illustrator Gavin Bishop as my high school art teacher at Linwood High and remember seeing his artwork for his various books in progress on his desk. This was where my love of illustration and ink drawing probably started. Since high school I have taken life drawing classes and studied cartooning under French cartoonist Florence de Bray. Being named the 1998 Winner of the National Rogue Cartooning Competition, a Christchurch based cartooning group which included fellow Brighton Gallery artist Tony Scanlan, was encouragement early on. In 1999 I was a finalist in the Christchurch Mail newspaper cartooning competition and exhibited in Le Donne Ridono Biannual International Women Cartoonists’ Exhibition in Ferrara, Italy. Over the years I have worked as a freelance cartoonist for various publications and I am a member of Funtime Comics. I enjoy all sorts of art – sculpture, drawing, illustration, collage etc. Experimentation and trying new things is the fun part!
